My take on gas versus charcoal and the environment

The problem with everyone’s argument about which is better for the environment is that they are using the measurement factor BTU.  They are assuming you are using a certain amount of fuel per hour and calculating its impact on the environment that way.  My opinion is that they should focus on more fuel efficient grills like the Big Green Egg.  If you want to compare efficiency there is none.  It is like comparing a motor home that gets 8 miles to the gallon to car that gets 100 miles to the gallon.  A typical Webber charcoal grill can burn through 10 pounds of charcoal per hour, which is the same as having a 15,000 BTU gas grill with all of its burners turned on high for an hour.  A Big Green Egg can cook continuously with the same 10 pounds of charcoal for up to 15 hours.  So on a case by case basis the Green Egg with always use less fuel to do the same job as a gas grill or convention charcoal grill.
